Mood Music for Cats

Cats Get Stressed Out Too

Cats will often let us know when they are stressed. If your cat is ghosting around looking for a place to hide during a thunderstorm, the stress is obvious. But when you come home after 10 hours you won’t find a note on the kitchen table saying “I got lonely. I got scared. I missed you… I’m really stressed out!” Instead you might find a puddle on the floor.

A lot of things cause stress in cats. They can suffer from separation anxiety when left alone. If you are anxious or upset they pick up on it. The constant racket from TV and radio doesn’t help either. In multiple cat households they often get on each others nerves. All this can lead to health and behavior problems. And yes, it can even make some kitties more prone to overeating!

Music Therapy for Cats

Music therapy helps cats the same way it helps people. Pet music is specifically designed to help pets relax and achieve a calm mental state. Gentle classical music is a often starting point. There are also original compositions just for pets. Some CDs include nature sounds and other interesting things to help alleviate boredom as well as stress.

In addition having relaxing music, a pet music CD should also have any sounds that are irritating to pets removed. Cats and dogs have a wider range of hearing than we do. While human hearing is limited to somewhere in the 20 Hz to 20 kHz range, a cat can hear from about 45 Hz to 64 kHz. High frequencies we can’t even hear can be annoying or even painful to a cat or dog. And low frequencies can frighten some pets.

Removing the Bad Vibes

My Pet Speaker is a special speaker that has a frequency response of 200 Hz to 12 kHz to filter out the frequencies that can bother pets. You can reproduce this effect yourself. MP3 and other “lossy” encoding methods remove frequencies we can’t hear to produce a smaller file. Normally anything above 16 kHz is removed and when configured to output the smallest possible file anything above 12 KHz is tossed out. So it looks like that MP3 files naturally eliminate the high frequencies that can bother cats.

Disabling your subwoofers should take care of the low end frequencies from 20 Hz to 200 Hz. Though even with these bothersome frequencies removed, your cat probably won’t get mellow and relaxed if you’re listening to death metal.

Pet Music to the Rescue

Pet music CDs are the easy answer. The music is carefully chosen and tested, offending frequencies are removed… all you do is pop it in the player.
